6 tips for skiing with children

Skiing with children

Taking your children skiing for the first time can be a magical experience – watching them get the ski bug, building a snowman, enjoying a hot chocolate in a mountain restaurant, or sledging with their friends.  But it can also be a bit stressful, so here we have listed a few top tips for skiing with children.

Short airport transfer

Travelling with children is never easy and some resorts are three hours plus from the airport, particularly during the busy school holiday weeks.   Aim for a resort with a short airport transfer to reduce stress and maximize your holiday time.

Chauffeur service

When you ski with children you normally have your hands full (literally) – your skis and poles, the kids’ skis and poles and often the children themselves, so it’s a good idea to book a chalet with easy access to the slopes.  But beware – a chalet only 50-100m from the slopes can be a nightmare because walking in ski boots for the first time and carrying all your kit is not easy.

There are two options to make your life as easy as possible – 1) stay in a chalet right on the slopes, or 2) stay in a chalet that offers a chauffeured minibus – and make sure it’s a flexible service rather than set for 9am drop offs and 4pm pick ups.

Quiet weeks

When skiing with children you’re often tied to the school holiday weeks which sadly are the most expensive and often the busiest weeks in resort.  Christmas though is a generally quiet time to come skiing, and it feels magical for children to be in the snow for the festive period. The Easter weeks are also a great time to ski when the slopes are quieter than Feb half term, and you’ll normally enjoy some sunny Spring conditions.

Getting a head start

Skiing for the first time can be quite a strange and difficult experience for children, so it can be really beneficial to allow them to try it out before your first holiday.  There are many dry slopes and excellent snowdomes around the UK these days that provide a very realistic and safe introduction into skiing.  A few lessons at the snowdome will ensure they get off to a flying start on day one of your holiday.

Other activities

For many children skiing from 9am to 4pm is much too tiring, plus the weather conditions sometimes restrict little ones from being on the mountain all day.  If you can it’s a great idea to book a resort and/or accommodation with other activities on offer.  Indoor pools, ice skating rinks, cinemas, bowling alleys are all great options for fun off the slopes.

Ski with friends

Skiing is a fun and exciting new experience for children but even more so if they have some friends to share it with.  Family ski holidays work really well when two or three families with children the same ages join forces and hit the slopes together.  Not only is it great fun for the kids snowball fighting, sledging etc but the adults get to enjoy a bottle of wine together around the fire in the evenings… happy days!

Paddy, Jo, Andy, and the rest of the Nine & Tenne team were absolutely amazing from start to finish. Their care and attention to detail ensured our holiday was both memorable and seamless. Andy checked in with us most days to make sure we had everything we needed and thoughtfully suggested places to eat and experiences suited to all of us. This was an absolute five-star experience, and we would thoroughly recommend Nine & Tenne to anyone looking for a truly special ski holiday in Chatel.

Great chalet directly opposite Linga lift, so easy access to the slopes. We were self catered and the chalet was very well stocked with good equipment. Paddy and Andy were very helpful coordinating transfers, taxis into Chatel centre, restaurant bookings, ski hire and lift passes. Hot tub was a bonus after skiing all day. Highly recommend.

Just another boring 5 star review for the team at Nine and Tenne. They’d probably love some constructive criticism but honestly there’s nothing to criticise! Paddy and Andy were warm and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Andy was like a human internet with bookings for taxis and meals within seconds. So impressive. We were a large group, but everyone felt well looked after throughout our stay. The Chalet was beautiful, the fridge perfectly stocked, the cooked meals and chef night were excellent. The ski hire door delivery was super helpful, and having a taxi to the slopes every day was just an added bonus that made things so much easier! This was a “treat” holiday for our whole family, but I hope one day we can visit another Nine and Tenne chalet in Chatel (which is also idyllic!). Normally I am happy to be back in Devon after holidays, but this one was just too good! I wanted to be back in Chatel!! Take me back!!

The hosting was over and above, thank you! Busy slopes but lunch and dinner all sorted at a great selection of places. The recently refurbished chalet was spacious and right by the bus stop (with live tracker). We actually drove to the free parking by the lift each morning to enjoy the massive Portes du Soleil ski area. Chatel was really characterful, still with a French feel. We will be back!

We are just back from a wonderful week staying at Chalet Grange et Merle. A party of 3 generations, 6 adults and 4 children (9-2). Paddy and team from Nine & Tenne organised it all faultlessly with great attention to detail: from airport transfers, Ski hire at the chalet (so easy and convenient), daily private transport to the ski lifts, ski passes etc. etc. Andy was really helpful and made everything easy for us including shopping. Grange et Merle was a wonderful spacious atmospheric chalet and the sauna and hot tub were resounding successes, especially with the kids. We opted for their Freedom package plus some extras which was excellent (part superb catering and part "freedom" to do our own thing) and which suited us and the kids really well. our only trivial suggestion for improvement is to provide bath/pool robes it was a chilly dash to the hot tub with just a towel! Great holiday much enjoyed by all - highly recommended and many thanks to Paddy, Andy and the team.
