The Best Mountain Restaurants in Châtel & the Portes du Soleil

One of the true pleasures of skiing in Châtel and the wider Portes du Soleil is that lunch can be just as memorable as the skiing itself. Long sunny terraces, traditional alpine dishes, breathtaking mountain views and relaxed afternoons are all part of the experience.

Whether you’re searching for a traditional mountain refuge serving hearty Savoyard classics or a lively terrace perfect for an afternoon in the sunshine, the Portes du Soleil offers some of the finest on-mountain dining in the Alps.

With over 600km of linked pistes spanning France and Switzerland, there is no shortage of incredible places to stop throughout the ski day. Here are some of our favourite mountain restaurants in Châtel and across the Portes du Soleil.

Chez Crépy – Plaine Dranse, Châtel

A firm favourite in the heart of the Châtel ski area, Chez Crépy is everything a traditional mountain restaurant should be — authentic, welcoming and perfectly positioned for a long alpine lunch.

Located in Plaine Dranse, this family-run restaurant is known for its relaxed atmosphere, generous portions and classic Savoyard dishes. Expect all the mountain favourites including tartiflette, fondue and perfectly cooked grilled meats, best enjoyed alongside a glass of wine on the sunny terrace.

Its central location also makes it an ideal meeting point for groups exploring different parts of the mountain throughout the day.

T’Chapa – Les Lindarets (The Goat Village)

Situated in the famous goat village of Les Lindarets, T’Chapa offers one of the most atmospheric lunch settings in the Portes du Soleil.

Surrounded by traditional wooden chalets and snow-covered mountain scenery, this popular spot combines a lively alpine atmosphere with excellent regional cuisine. The terrace is particularly popular on sunny afternoons, while the cosy interior provides the perfect refuge during snowy days.

For many visitors, skiing into Les Lindarets for lunch is one of the highlights of the entire Portes du Soleil experience.

Folie Douce – Avoriaz

For guests looking for a more energetic mountain lunch experience, Folie Douce in Avoriaz delivers one of the most iconic après-ski atmospheres in the Alps.

Combining live music, DJs, performers and panoramic mountain views, it offers a completely different style of alpine dining. The large terrace becomes a vibrant social hub throughout the afternoon, attracting skiers from across the Portes du Soleil.

Whether you stop for a relaxed lunch or stay for the famous après-ski celebrations, Folie Douce is an experience every skier should enjoy at least once.

Chez Coquoz – Champéry

Crossing into Switzerland is one of the unique pleasures of skiing the Portes du Soleil, and Chez Coquoz in Champéry is a perfect excuse to make the journey.

Full of traditional alpine charm, this historic restaurant is known for its warm hospitality and beautifully prepared Swiss mountain cuisine. The atmosphere feels wonderfully authentic, offering a slower pace and timeless character that perfectly reflects the charm of the Swiss side of the ski area.

It’s an ideal stop for a leisurely lunch before skiing back towards France through the vast linked terrain.

Toupin – Champéry

A long-standing favourite on the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil, Toupin is renowned for its traditional mountain setting, warm atmosphere and excellent regional dishes.

Positioned high above Champéry with spectacular views across the surrounding peaks, it’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy a classic alpine lunch. Expect comforting mountain cuisine, friendly service and a wonderfully authentic feel that captures the spirit of skiing in Switzerland.

The journey across the border to reach Toupin is all part of the experience and one of the many reasons skiers love exploring the full Portes du Soleil circuit.

Chez Gaby – Champoussin

Tucked away in the peaceful village of Champoussin, Chez Gaby is one of those hidden gems that regular Portes du Soleil skiers return to year after year.

Known for its exceptional food, friendly atmosphere and stunning panoramic views, the restaurant offers a more relaxed and traditional mountain dining experience away from the busier resort centres.

The skiing around Champoussin is often wonderfully quiet, making Chez Gaby the perfect reward after a morning exploring the Swiss side of the ski area.

What Makes Mountain Dining in Châtel So Special?

Unlike some purpose-built ski resorts, Châtel retains a genuine sense of alpine authenticity. Many mountain restaurants remain family-run, serving regional dishes that reflect generations of Savoyard tradition.

Combined with the scale of the Portes du Soleil ski area, this creates an experience where every ski day can feel completely different — whether you’re enjoying a relaxed lunch in Plaine Dranse, skiing into Switzerland for the afternoon, or discovering hidden mountain villages across the resort.

It’s one of the many reasons guests return to Châtel year after year.

Paddy, Jo, Andy, and the rest of the Nine & Tenne team were absolutely amazing from start to finish. Their care and attention to detail ensured our holiday was both memorable and seamless. Andy checked in with us most days to make sure we had everything we needed and thoughtfully suggested places to eat and experiences suited to all of us. This was an absolute five-star experience, and we would thoroughly recommend Nine & Tenne to anyone looking for a truly special ski holiday in Chatel.

Great chalet directly opposite Linga lift, so easy access to the slopes. We were self catered and the chalet was very well stocked with good equipment. Paddy and Andy were very helpful coordinating transfers, taxis into Chatel centre, restaurant bookings, ski hire and lift passes. Hot tub was a bonus after skiing all day. Highly recommend.

Just another boring 5 star review for the team at Nine and Tenne. They’d probably love some constructive criticism but honestly there’s nothing to criticise! Paddy and Andy were warm and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Andy was like a human internet with bookings for taxis and meals within seconds. So impressive. We were a large group, but everyone felt well looked after throughout our stay. The Chalet was beautiful, the fridge perfectly stocked, the cooked meals and chef night were excellent. The ski hire door delivery was super helpful, and having a taxi to the slopes every day was just an added bonus that made things so much easier! This was a “treat” holiday for our whole family, but I hope one day we can visit another Nine and Tenne chalet in Chatel (which is also idyllic!). Normally I am happy to be back in Devon after holidays, but this one was just too good! I wanted to be back in Chatel!! Take me back!!

The hosting was over and above, thank you! Busy slopes but lunch and dinner all sorted at a great selection of places. The recently refurbished chalet was spacious and right by the bus stop (with live tracker). We actually drove to the free parking by the lift each morning to enjoy the massive Portes du Soleil ski area. Chatel was really characterful, still with a French feel. We will be back!

We are just back from a wonderful week staying at Chalet Grange et Merle. A party of 3 generations, 6 adults and 4 children (9-2). Paddy and team from Nine & Tenne organised it all faultlessly with great attention to detail: from airport transfers, Ski hire at the chalet (so easy and convenient), daily private transport to the ski lifts, ski passes etc. etc. Andy was really helpful and made everything easy for us including shopping. Grange et Merle was a wonderful spacious atmospheric chalet and the sauna and hot tub were resounding successes, especially with the kids. We opted for their Freedom package plus some extras which was excellent (part superb catering and part "freedom" to do our own thing) and which suited us and the kids really well. our only trivial suggestion for improvement is to provide bath/pool robes it was a chilly dash to the hot tub with just a towel! Great holiday much enjoyed by all - highly recommended and many thanks to Paddy, Andy and the team.
