Skiing not queing

If you love the idea of skiing all day without ever taking the same lift twice, Châtel and the wider Portes du Soleil are pretty much your dream playground. This vast Franco–Swiss ski area is one of the largest linked ski domains in the world, with a lift system designed to keep you skiing rather than queuing.

Ski playground
The Portes du Soleil spans 12 resorts across France and Switzerland, including Châtel, Avoriaz, Morzine, Les Gets, Champéry, Les Crosets and Morgins – all connected by an impressive network of around 600 km of pistes and roughly 300 marked runs, from gentle greens to steep, leg-burning blacks.

To support this enormous terrain, the area operates over 200 ski lifts, blending high-speed chairlifts, gondolas, cable cars and traditional drag lifts. Together, they create one seamless, ski-anywhere system accessible with a single lift pass.

The real charm of the Portes du Soleil is how perfectly the lift network encourages exploration. You can start your morning in France, cruise over a ridge, and suddenly find yourself dropping into a Swiss valley for lunch – all without ever feeling like you’ve “commuted” across the mountain.

Châtel sits right at the heart of the Portes du Soleil on the French–Swiss border, making it one of the very best bases for exploring the entire domain. If you’re new to Châtel, picture a traditional, picturesque alpine village surrounded by dramatic peaks, yet with immediate access to the world’s largest international ski area.

There are five different lift start points in Châtel, and the resort’s slopes are beautifully interconnected. Intermediate skiers can begin their day at any of these lifts and effortlessly ski back to the village from multiple directions.

Modern chairlifts and gondolas fan out from the village into two main sectors:
• Super-Châtel / Chalet Neuf, offering fast access towards Morgins and Torgon in Switzerland.
• Linga–Pré la Joux, linking smoothly into Avoriaz and the central Portes du Soleil circuit.

The result? From a chalet base in Châtel, you can clip into your skis in the morning and be in a completely different resort – or even a different country – well before lunch.

Lifts designed for exploring, not queueing
The Portes du Soleil is a paradise for adventure skiing, with countless valleys, bowls and hidden sectors to discover. There are very few bottlenecks, queues are generally short, and there’s almost always more than one route to get from A to B – perfect for avoiding the busier lifts and carving your own path across the mountains.

The area also offers around 30 fun zones and snowparks, plus nearly 100 mountain restaurants, all connected effortlessly by the same smooth, reliable lift network.

Châtel & the Portes du Soleil
Put simply: the lift system here transforms a ski holiday into a journey. You’re not just lapping the same few pistes; you’re touring vast valleys, crossing borders and linking together big, flowing routes that can last for hours.

Base yourself in Châtel and you’re plugged straight into one of the most impressive lift networks in the Alps – a place where “just one more run” can quickly turn into a full-scale mountain adventure.
