How to snowshoe

“A snowshoe is footwear for walking over the snow. Snowshoes work by distributing the weight of the person over a larger area so that the person’s foot does not sink completely into the snow, a quality called “flotation”” (Wikipedia)

A great activity for non-skiers or for skiers who want to try something a bit different during their week away, snowshoeing is a low risk, inexpensive way to access some lovely parts of the mountains and is a pretty good aerobic workout too.

Historically, snowshoes were essential tools for fur traders, trappers and anyone whose life or living depended on the ability to get around in areas of deep and frequent snowfall, and they remain necessary equipment for forest rangers and others who must be able to get around areas inaccessible to motorized vehicles when the snow is deep.

Snowshoes today are divided into three types:

Modern day snowshoeing is made up of casual snowshoers who hike trails for pleasure, the snowshoeing enthusiasts who trek through the backcountry, and the competitors who race.

In Chatel, snowshoeing is a very popular activity for skiers and non-skiers alike, and there are varying routes for all abilities.  It’s also possible to enjoy evening walks, using head torches (and the light from the moon).  Combine a guided walk with a good mountain restaurant and you have all the ingredients for a magical evening that everyone in your group will remember.  Ask your NINE & TENNE chalet host for more information!

One of the loveliest chalets we have stayed in, large rooms, private swimming pool. We had food delivered to the chalet so we could eat when we like, shopping was done for us when we arrived. Skis brought to the chalet. Paddy, who owns and runs the chalet, is lovely, friendly, always there to answer questions and run us any where on request, the perfect host. Fabulous holiday with views to die for. X

La Belle Vache was awesome. The house was beautiful and well-appointed, in a great location. The house is comfortable with great space to hang out, cook, and enjoy the mountains. Paddy was also wonderful, and met our every need and request. He was so helpful with making arrangements so that our ski week was seamless and so much fun. We highly recommend this property and Paddy!

We have just spent a fabulous week in Chalet L’Hermitage; absolutely perfect location for families. The level of service was amazing from the start. Paddy arranged everything for us from ski lessons for both adults & children, to ski hire being fitted at the chalet on arrival to booking our lunch on the mountain to make our first day as easy a possible. The team then made our week run seamlessly, catering to our every need. Nothing was too small & everything was delivered with a smile & a laugh......we loved the sociable nature of the service. The food was also fantastic, for both adults & children; really top quality! The chalet was beautiful & clean, with amazing views across the valley & plenty of room for a large group. Thank you so much to Paddy, Chris, Shona, Olivia & Tony for giving us such a wonderful week in the mountains, we really hope to see you again next year!!! X

We had a really fabulous week at Chalet Aurore - thank you! Naomi, Matt and Becky looked after us so well with the best chalet catering that we've ever experienced (we loved the combination of 'comfort food' nights and four course nights). They were very accommodating of the needs of our group, two younger children wanting to eat earlier some nights and one member of the group with some dietary restrictions. They were also personable, professional and good fun! The chalet is beautiful with very comfortable beds and it was a real treat to find the Molton Brown products. Paddy was always on hand to give advice regarding weather/ski areas/alternative activities etc. Having Matt available to drop us at the slopes and pick us up when we needed it work really well too (although we did manage to nearly ski all the way home on a couple of occasions!) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Nine & Tenne.
